Zhang Kaitong
Born in Cangzhou, Hebei in 1991, the artist currently lives and works between Berlin, Athens, and Beijing. He graduated from Hebei University of Technology in 2014 with a degree in Graphic Design, and later studied at the Kunsthochschule Kassel under Andrea Büttner and Dierk Schmidt, receiving his Master’s degree in 2024.
His sustained movement between different cultural contexts has gradually blurred his perception of boundaries and identity, shaping a practice rooted in observation and analysis. His work transforms painting into a visible form of philosophy—one that extends beyond the flat surface and becomes activated in space, resonating psychologically with the viewer.
Like a prism, his works reflect contemporary structures of perception and the conditions of our time. He is particularly interested in how images are seen, fade, and re-emerge across time. By reconstructing “expired” images, he explores the relationship between the act of viewing and cultural memory. In this process, the image becomes a vessel that gathers fragmented time, turning into a reflection upon culture itself and pointing toward a transcendent state of spiritual calm.
